SPECTRA’S HISTORY – MILESTONES AND MEMORIES 2008 – 2025

2008/09

In 2008, Spectra began its journey at the Broadway Drive site in Halesworth, initially offering extrusion blow moulding, design and tooling. We quickly diversified, adding injection stretch blow moulding and hot foil blocking to our capabilities, while launching our very first product catalogue. 2009 marked the beginning of our sustainability legacy with the introduction of Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) packaging for both HDPE and PET bottles. To keep pace with our rapid growth, we secured planning permission for a new purpose-built factory on the outskirts of Halesworth.

2010/11

In 2010, Spectra laid the foundation for its future with a bespoke 17.4-acre modern manufacturing facility. This year of expansion also saw us secure our first export order and debut at the Packaging Innovations show in Birmingham. We enhanced our product finishing by introducing peripheral hot foil banding for closures. By 2011, we relocated to our new home at Sparrowhawk Road, a site celebrated for its eco-friendly design. We also strengthened apprenticeship initiatives, and staff raised over £3,000 for charity, completing the National Three Peaks Challenge.

2012/13

2012 was a pivotal year as we enhanced our manufacturing autonomy by bringing injection moulding in-house. Demonstrating early leadership in sustainability, we made the bold decision to cease all PVC production to reduce our environmental impact. By 2013, our eco-innovation accelerated with the introduction of sugar-cane-based biopolymer packaging for both HDPE and PET. We pushed the boundaries of decoration with raised and seamless printing techniques and expanded our product ranges. To support overseas interest, we established a dedicated export department and exhibited at shows in Amsterdam and London.

2014/15

In 2014, Spectra expanded its international footprint, making a debut at Cosmetic Business in Munich and supporting partners at the Empack show in Belgium. This year of growth also saw a surge in demand for our specialised decoration services, while our team stayed rooted in the community by supporting Children in Need and donating 1,000 bottles for a local school’s poppy field event. Innovation peaked in 2015 with the installation of energy-efficient hybrid ISBM machinery and free air cooling systems. We broadened our market reach by appointing an official Scandinavian distributor and collaborating on new bottle designs for industry leaders Giflor and Aptar.

2016/17

In 2016, Spectra gained national prestige with two Luxury Packaging Award nominations and inclusion in the “1000 Companies to Inspire Britain” list. This period of high innovation saw the launch of Illuminate, an anti-counterfeiting print solution and additional closure designs. Operational growth accelerated in 2017 as we broke ground on a 24,000 sq. ft. facility expansion. To bolster efficiency and capacity, we installed hybrid injection moulding machinery and variable speed compressors while transitioning to double day shifts. Even amidst this rapid scaling, our team remained community-focused, supporting the Operation Christmas Box appeal.

2018/19

In 2018, Spectra celebrated its 10th anniversary by completing a major facility expansion. This milestone year saw the launch of our PCR10 initiative, mandating 10% recycled content, and our commitment to Operation Clean Sweep. Internationally, we strengthened our presence with events in France and Germany. In 2019, we intensified our environmental advocacy, organising our first beach clean, and debating plastic impact on BBC Radio. Our export growth continued alongside industry recognition, notably receiving a highly commended award at the Horner’s Bottle Makers Awards for our innovative recycled custom packaging for Beached.

2020/21

In 2020, Spectra demonstrated remarkable resilience, operating as an essential supplier during the pandemic. We supported critical services, providing vital packaging for schools, emergency services and care homes. As demand grew into 2021, we accelerated our sustainability mission by launching the PCR35 initiative, incorporating 35% recycled content across all bottles. To ensure transparency, we commissioned an independent Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), proving the environmental benefits of PET and HDPE. Celebrating both local and global success, we launched a new website and supported Paralympic gold medalist Jordan Catchpole, MBE.

2022/23

From 2022 to 2023, Spectra set a new benchmark for environmental and social responsibility. A landmark commitment to Prevented Ocean Plastic (POP) across all recycled PET products was further expanded to include HDPE, supported by a firsthand team visit to Indonesia. Our sustainability efforts were reinforced by the installation of 1,700 solar panels. Beyond innovation, our community spirit thrived through fundraising for the Ukraine conflict and raising over £3,000 for Macmillan. These achievements earned Spectra “Business of the Year” honours and prestigious recognition at the Horner’s Bottlemakers and Environmental Packaging Awards.

2024/25

2024 and 2025 marked a period of exceptional growth and sustainability for Spectra. Our ESG leadership was solidified with an EcoVadis Gold Award, placing us in the top 5% globally. We drove environmental innovation by launching food-contact approved Prevented Ocean Plastic (POP) closures and helping Lush Cosmetics transition to POP recycled materials. To meet increasing demand, we scaled our manufacturing capabilities to a 24/7 operation using advanced automation. Beyond production, staff conquered the National Three Peaks Challenge, raising nearly £3000 for Teenage Cancer Trust.
